Case Study

The following case study highlights typical qualitative in-depth interview and quantitative survey results for a FinTech company's suite of 4 products servicing over 2 million active users.

Problem

The company's CTO needed to validate a new software application that was recently developed to support small and medium sized retail business owners. The app was created to help retail business owners update product offerings in their stores based on store measures such as profitability, employee morale and customer loyalty.

Solution

We decided on a two-phase user research approach to uncover deep and broad product insights. For the deep insights, we developed and deployed qualitative in-depth interviews. For the broad insights, we developed and deployed a quantitative survey.

We started with qualitative in-depth interviews. A persona was created for the target business owner as a way to select the best interview participants, as well as align stakeholders.  A panel of 16 target business owners were then selected according to a set of screening criteria, then field research of semi-structured qualitative interviews and proof-of-concept walkthroughs were performed with each participant. The 70 minute interviews and 20 minute walkthroughs were repeated for two key retail extremes:  holiday weekend and slow weekday. The project team consisted of a research lead, visual designer and recruiter / project manager.

Next, we finished with a quantitative survey. A primary goal of the survey was to validate how the deep interview results generalized to a broad spectrum of other small and medium business client attributes. Key attributes of interest included the type of business (e.g., casual restaurant, fine dining and clothing boutique) and mobility of staff (e.g., staff approach customer with a mobile terminal or customer approaches staff at a dedicated cashier desk). We developed a 120 question survey, then deployed it across the company's user base via as part of a regular marketing campaign. Both closed-ended and open-ended feedback from 520 owners across the USA completed the survey. The survey was designed to support analyses of sub-groups of data. Results were clustered according to the key retail dimensions uncovered from the qualitative interviews and stakeholder meetings with the CTO's team.

Results

The research insights led to the company pivoting to focus on boutique clothing stores as their primary market and successfully updating their software for small and medium sized business owners in this niche. Even though the total addressable market size was smaller than restaurant owners, the research insights clarified the company's particular competitive advantages in this niche. Absolute sales of the company's app increased by 32% over the next 6 months.
